Blackout Script Scene 3
Leading from the end of scene 2, all of the mothers will stand up and walk around the space repetitively calling James as if they've been longing to get his attention; they want to reach out to him because they know they don't talk and they're sad about this. The boys will represent James and sit down blocking their ears and trying to escape from the sound of their mother calling their name. Whilst chanting his name, the mothers will look up as if he's upstairs in the house. Eventually, the mothers will sit down whilst still looking up.
Courtney walks up to Charlie whilst saying " But you'd remember your granddad! "
After Courteney has said this, everyone runs around the space in the personas of little children. Your objective is to play. Whilst running around the space, you're shouting "IT!" at the same time.
Afterwards, you will then still keep the persona of a little child and pretend to wobble on the spot with your arms out as if you're trying to balance. After you wobble left-to-right four times, some people from each side of the room will drop to the ground as if they'd hurt themselves. The people left standing will then play the granddad and run to someone's aid who's on the floor and comfort them. Edgar will then stand up where he is and say "He did everything a dad would do".
After Edgar's line, granddads will help up the James'. You will all be on your feet and will walk around the space as if you're in a shop either being the granddad (the person who runs to your aid) or James (the person that falls down). For example, you could pretend you're looking at clothes and ask James whether he likes it or not.
Eventually, the granddad will start coughing whilst walking around the space at the shops then will gradually cough so much that they can't move. James will try to pull them but they're so ill that they can't budge and slowly fall to the ground taking James with them.
Everyone should be on the floor at this point. James characters should be comforting the granddad characters by helping them sit up. Granddads will be in pain but still try keep a smile on their faces, Whilst this happens, the following lines are said:
Kit: "You'd remember that".
Eleanor: "But then he got his cancer".
Danny: "So every night you'd go and sit with him".
Sam J: "Have a cup of tea and look out the back window".
After Sam has said his line, slowly, gang members Lara, Tobi, Kitty, D'Nai, Thaliqua, Kit, Hollie and Chloe will stand up and walk to the centre of the room whilst everyone remains on the floor. The people standing will then begin to fight the person in front of them but not actual fighting - just pushing and shoving at this point.
Then, they will depart from the person they were fighting. They will still remain in front of them but at a further distance. Eleanor will then say "They'd run at each other with bottles and bricks". When you hear the word bottle, people on Lara's side will pretend to pick up a bottle. When you hear the word bricks, people on Tobi's side will imitate picking up a brick. Remember to look fierce and angry at all times gang members! People on the floor, just observe them as if you can actually really see this happening outside the window.
Once pretend objects are picked up, you will come closer to the person opposite you and fight by pretending to punch, kick and slap each other but not for real of course. Gang members will then freeze whilst the following lines are said:
Charlie: You would just sit there and go
Charlie and Sam M: What are they fighting for?
Lauren: Cos your granddad never went out and started hitting people
Emily: He got his point across with his mouth, not with his hands
Olivia: He would just have to talk to you and people would listen to him

Blackout Script Scene 2
SCENE 2:
Kitty now plays the father and walks up behind Eleanor tutting as if she's mocking her.
Eleanor:
So you start remembering your dad
She turns round to face Kitty then walks away. When Eleanor starts walking, everyone gets up and gets into a cluttered semi-circle. Once everyone is together, Holly says: He was a woman-beater
Kitty swings her arm and 3/4 of us drop to the ground, leaving the middle of the semi circle still standing. Clay:
He beat your mum up everyday
The people who are left standing up will taunt the people on the floor by shouting at them "everyday" repetitively. They will be taking on the persona of the dad. The people on the floor will represent the mum and show that their objective is to hide whilst in the position that they're in on the floor. Holly and Kit then get up and stand in the centre. Holly goes on her knees and proposes to Kit. She then stands up and places a ring on Kit's finger and says:
From the day they got married
then Holly swings at Kit but Kit runs away then says:
Right up to the day they got divorced
whilst trying to pull off the ring then throws it in the centre of the stage.
When Kit throws the ring, this will indicate all the girls in the class to get up on their knees from the floor and pretend to put on make up to hide their scars. Whilst this happens, Clay will walk around the space slowly whilst saying: He used to beat her to a pulp So she stopped working She wouldn't go out the house Cos she was embarrassed She didn't want to walk down the street with her face all black and blue And you'd remember that your mum didn't want you to grow up to be like him
Everyone stands and finds their partner, one of the two is the mother, caring and nurturing the other, who is James. Whilst doing this the group must form a semi circle, with the mother behind and James in front. Bear in mind a spot that you can remember so you dont have to franticly pace around the space looking for somewhere to slot in within the circle.
Courtney then says:
She wanted you to be a famous lawyer
Or a famous doctor
Or a famous whatever.
Remember that on each line the posture of all those playing James should seem more hopeful and have more pride with each line Courtney says. When Courtney says "whatever," finishing his lines, all those playing James will fall, and be caught by the mother, standing behind them. The mothers will then push all the James into the middle where they will sit in a smaller semi circle. Alex then says:
And you'd remember that you were poor.
But you weren't poor poor.
Cos your mum still made sure there was dinner on the table every night.
While this is being said, the mothers will have three domestic actions in their head which they will do over and over again eg: walking the dog, cleaning... Their can even be the occasional comment as well. They then all come to the middle, handing their partner, James, a plate of food. Alex then says:
She'd give you her last penny,
she didnt care about herself.
All the James stand up, and run as fast as they can in a circle, after going round three times, the leader, Danny runs around the back of the mothers, all those playing James following, stopping and standing behind their partner when they reach them.
Once everyone is in their position, all of the James say:
But you'd remember you never really spoke to her.
All the mothers then come into the middle and say:
James?
While those standing behind sit done slowly, blending into the background. The mothers crouch down on to all fours, making another smaller semi circle. Fenton, Lauren and Eleanor stand at the beginning of the semi circle. Fenton who is playing James, says:
Yeah.
Lauren, who is playing the mum, says:
Your dinners out.
Lauren then gives Fenton the plate of food while Eleanor bends over and becomes a table. Once Fenton is finished he is lifted and supported by Lauren and Eleanor underneath his arms. Whilst Fenton, pushes down on their shoulders so that when he steps on the backs of those on all fours in the semi circle he puts minimal weight on them. As Fenton goes around the semi circle he says the lines:
Back up the stairs
So you never really spoke to her.
(This last bit needs revising as some lines seem to be left out.)
